I was aware that it might be annoying to those apps which use the
non-API symbols. But inadverted changes would produce obscure
failures and memory corruptions.

That's an obscurity which i did not anticipate.

Whether the hiding gets into effect depends on an experiment at
configuration time which tries --version-script=libisofs/libisofs.ver
with the linker. The OS X linker obviously fails with it and thus the
option is omitted.
